Neodymium Iron Boron Magnets

A class of rare earth material, neodymium magnets are available in both sintered and bonded forms, as well as custom configurations.

Major Characteristics

  • Most powerful (highest energy product) class of magnet material commercially available.
  • High Br, relatively high Hc, high BHmax.
  • Lower cost than samarium cobalt.
  • Temperature sensitive.
  • Susceptible to oxidation.
  • With careful design, some grades will function up at temps up to 200°C (392°F.
  • Energy product ranges from 10 MGOe to 53 MGOe
  • Relative cost Index (by weight): 40

Samarium Cobalt Magnets

A class of rare earth material, samarium cobalt magnets are available in both sintered and bonded forms, as well as custom configurations.

Major Characteristics

  • High Br, high Hc, relatively high BHmax
  • Higher in cost than neodymium iron boron
  • Highly resistant to oxidation
  • Most grades function well at temps up to 300°C (572°F)
  • Energy product ranges from 18 MGOe to about 33 MGOe
  • Relative cost index (by weight): 60

Alnico Magnets

An alloy of aluminum, nickel, and cobalt alnico magnets have been popular since the 1930s. Alnico magnets are available in cast and sintered forms, as well as in custom configurations.

Major Characteristics

  • High Br, low Hc, BHmax in the 5 MGOe range
  • Most temperature stable of all magnet types
  • Functional with no significant performance loss in temps up to 500°C (932°F).
  • Relatively easily demagnetized by opposing magnetic fields
  • Excellent oxidation resistance
  • Energy product ranges from 1.4 MGOe to 7.5 MGOe.
  • Relative cost index (by weight): 25

Ferrite / Ceramic Magnets

Composed of barium or strontium ferrite, these permanent magnets exhibit good resistance to demagnetization, and are the lowest cost materials available today. Hard Sintered ferrite magnets are hard, brittle, and used extensively in consumer products. Ceramic (ferrite) magnets are commonly used as refrigerator magnets.

  • Relative cost index (by weight): 1.5
